Garden column: protecting your plants this winter

With snow on the ground and the forecast temperature in 20’s F, it’s not best to plant any leftover perennials in the ground for the season. However, you can overwinter any container perennials in an unheated garage or cold basement. Place the container plant inside a bigger container or wooden box. Use straw, leaves, hay, or packing peanuts to mulch between the two containers. Do not leave any air pockets. Then mulch heavily on the outside, covering the entire container from all sides. Occasionally check the soil moisture in the container and keep it barely moist.
