FAQs
What do I do if I can’t attend a committee meeting?
Youth are expected to attend all committee meetings. If a youth member is unable to attend a committee meeting, they should contact their mentor and/or the chairperson of the committee.
As a youth representative, how many committee meetings may I miss?
Any Youth In Governance member not attending at least 60% of their committee meetings by the November attendance check will be asked to step down and an alternate will take their place on their committee. Additionally, any Youth In Governance member not attending at least 60% of their committee meetings by the February attendance check will be asked to step down, an alternate will not take their place, and they will not be recognized at the County Board meeting in May. (Approved by PDEEC August 9, 2017 & September 13, 2017)
Where and when are my committee meetings held?
Generally, committees meet at the same time and same location every meeting. Please refer to the Kenosha County website for specific committee details: https://www.kenoshacounty.org/1057/Committees
Is there a dress code for committees?
s a general guideline, business casual is expected. Check in with your mentor for guidance on how the committee dresses, as it may differ amongst each.
Do I really get to vote?
Youth are permitted to vote on all motions made at committee meetings. On roll call votes, youth members should vote before County Board supervisors vote. This is done to avoid any unintended influence by adult members. The youth vote is recorded in the minutes for the record but is a non-binding advisory vote per Kenosha County Board 2007 Resolution #105.
How long does a committee meeting typically last?
This is variable from meeting to meeting. Generally, Youth In Governance representatives should expect committee meetings to last around an hour. They can run as short as half hour or go as long as three hours, depending on the agenda and citizen comments.
When can YIG representatives leave a meeting?
Youth In Governance representatives are expected to attend the full length of the meeting. However, if a meeting is running unusually long, check in with your YIG mentor or committee chair to receive permission to leave. Some meetings take longer due to citizen comments and it is understood that YIG members have school the next day.
How does the service project work?
The service project is intended to be a collaborative, group project amongst all members that gives back to the Kenosha County community. If a majority of the youth representatives choose to do a service project, it is up to you all on how it looks.
